The Interdisciplinary Science Lectures on Molecular Crystals were successfully held online from 24th to 28th April, 2023. The series of Interdisciplinary Science Lectures focused on cutting-edge scientific topics in molecular crystals and featured academic discussions on the mechnochemistry, high-pressure crystallography, phase transitions and pharmaceutical materials. Two distinguished international speakers brought an academic feast to more than 40 faculties and graduate students. Professor Wei Li from School of Materials Science and Engineering, Nankai University, delivered a welcome speech and hosted this symposium.

The event featured a series of lectures by Professor Elena Boldyreva from Novosibirsk State University, Russia, a fellow of the Academia Europea, which were titled “Mechanochemistry”, “High Pressure Research and Organic Crystal Chemistry”, “Challenges on the Way from Drug Compounds to Drugs. How Can Solid-state Chemistry Help?”, and “Mechanical Effects and Transformations in Crystals”. Professor Boldyreva stressed the importance of solid state chemistry and crystallography in understanding the structures and properties of molecular crystals, and also gave a number of examples to demonstrate the applications of molecular crystals. Professor Andrzej Katrusiak from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, delivered 2 lectures titled “Phase Transitions and Polymorphism” and “Compressibility and Thermal Expansion (Definitions and Exceptions), Phase Transitions and Chemical Transformations”. Prof. Katrusiak stated that phase transitions and polymorphism are interdisciplinary directions for studying molecular crystals across chemistry, crystallography, materials science and pharmaceutical industry. Faculties and students had a heated discussion with the speakers on the presentations.

The Interdisciplinary Science Lectures not only enhanced the international perspective of faculties and students, but also strengthened the communication and cooperation in materials science and many other disciplines between Nankai University and internationally top research institutions.

The Interdisciplinary Science Lectures were successfully organized with the support of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Smart Sensing Interdisciplinary Science Center, Nankai University and TKL of Metal and Molecule-Based Material Chemistry, Tianjin.
