Research Center for Photonics/Electronic Materials in the School of Materials Science and Engineering in Nankai is founded by Prof. Jiaming Sun in 2015. Its mission aims towards developing new materials and devices to satisfy emerging demands in information and energy fields. We are interested in improving the performance of conventional silicon electronics and optoelectronics, and are also engaged in developing soft electronics using nanoscale materials and polymers.

Prof. Jiaming Sun’s team (Laboratory of Silicon Optoelectronics and Energy Storage Devices) works on silicon based luminescent thin film materials, organic optoelectronic materials, microelectronics high-k grid materials, giant dielectric materials and wide band gap semiconductor optical thin film materials, as well as silicon based luminescent devices, integrated photonic control devices, integrated circuit, optical sensor, supercapacitor, artificial intelligence and bionic structures based on these compound materials.

Professor Jian Zhu 's team (Nanoscale Advanced Materials and Additive Manufacturing Lab, nAMLAB) is dedicated to exploring novel non-silicon electronic and optoelectronic devices. The research group is mainly engaged in the synthesis and large-area assembly of nanomaterials, and exploring their applications in low-cost, high-performance, soft/stretchable electronics and optoelectronics, which are expected to demonstrate vital importance in artificial intelligence, medical care, bioimplants, human-machine interfaces, internet of things etc.

The Research center has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program of China (“973” Project),  etc. More than 100 research papers have been published in the world's leading scientific and technical journals.

Currently, research center has spent more than 8 million yuan for the equipment, including four Atomic Layer Deposition Systems, a process line of manufacturing nano-compound thin films optoelectronic prototype devices, an automatic system for testing and analyzing optoelectronic devices. These equipment and software systems in the laboratory can be adjusted to meet practical needs. The center also has thermal evaporation deposition system, optical lithography system, 3D printing system, electrochemical station, ambient/vacuum probe station, mechanical analyzer, and other important equipment for the fabrication and measurement of electronics and optoelectronics. The center has established strong collaborations with the researchers in Germany, Sweden, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries. The graduates from this center are equipped with sufficient knowledge to have successful careers in information and energy companies, research institutions, and universities. Students are also encouraged to go abroad to attend conferences or pursue higher degrees.

Biography of principal investigators:

Professor Jiaming Sun graduated from school of physics in Jilin University, and used to work in Institute of Physics, Tokyo University in Japan, German Rossendorf research center. Now he is a professor of Nankai University. He has engaged in silicon-based electroluminescence research for more than 20 years and has made a significant progress in three types of silicon-based electroluminescent devices, such as silicon PN junction LED, Er doped nano-silicon and rare-earth ion implanted SiO2 MOS structure. He has won the annual advanced research awards of Rossendorf Research Center in Germany in 2004. Laser Focus World and Science Daily have published articles about his work on the topic of high-efficiency ultraviolet and wavelength from red to blue adjustable silicon-based light-emitting devices. He returned to work in Nankai University and established the silicon photonics and energy storage devices laboratory. More than 80 papers have been published in core journals at home and abroad. He is a committee member of the Chinese Society of Luminescence and Chinese Doping Nano-materials Luminescence Meeting.

Prof. Jian Zhu obtained his B.S. and B.E. from Nankai University and Tianjin University in 2007. He then obtained his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA in 2013, and afterwards conducted the post-doctoral research at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA. In 2017, Prof. Jian Zhu joined Nankai University as a full-professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering. He has published more than 40 papers in Nature, Nat. Nanotechnol., Adv. Mater., Nano Lett. and many other top journals. His work has been featured in Phys.Org, Wired, Discovery News, Science Daily, etc.
